LIFESTYLE:
NEW TREES AND BINS ON SALFORD'S STREETS.
Tuesday 22nd January, 2002
In the run up to the Commonwealth Games,
Salford is slated for more than new sports stadiums and expensive loft apartments. To give the best impression
to the thousands of visiting tourists, a campaign to clean up the city is
underway.
First up is the placement of 75 waste baskets throughout the
city, supplied by hip ad media firm Trash Media. In return for these
new bins they will be selling space on the side to
advertisers - adornments so far include pop starlets Atomic Kitten.

Atomic Kitten on the wrong side of a
new Salford bin? Close
up.
"Litter can make our streets appear unkempt, unsightly and uncared for," stated Councillor David Lancaster
for the environmental services, "All Salford residents want to live in a clean environment and so we hope that people will use these extra bins."
Over in Winton the environment is being enhanced further with a
tree-planting project along a busy stretch of Worsley Road.
Funding for this scheme is provided by Greening Greater Manchester, a joint council and business
venture which has supported over 250 community projects and, to date,
has injected £3 million into Lancashire. Those involved include local authorities,
environmental charity 'Groundwork', Biffa and The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal
Authority. It is also hoped school children will
become involved in the project designed not only to brighten up the community, but also increase awareness
of the environment.
"The trees are a good start," said one local resident, "but is it just a quick fix for a place with bigger problems?"
"Trees play an important part in our lives.."
claimed Councillor Lancaster "..as well as providing agricultural benefits they give shade, energy and are vital to conservation."
Already proud to be a nuclear free city it is hoped that these schemes, which are already underway, will add to a lasting,
green image of Salford.
