Car-jack wave hits bury:
Thursday 31st Jan 2002
Greater Manchester Police are urging
motorists to protect their cars from theft – even whilst driving. Five
incidents of attempted car jacking occurred in the past 48hrs in Bury
alone.
"These vehicles are worth several
thousands of pounds and someone will always be looking for an
opportunity to take from you" stated DI Jane Antrobus of Whitefield
CID yesterday.
On several occasions drivers have been
brutally attacked by the thieves.
TUES:
1815hrs: A 32 yr old woman was
overpowered by 2 men on Church Meadow in Unsworth attempting to steal
her Honda Prelude. Despite stealing the keys they failed to start the
car, instead escaping on foot.
1905hrs: A 42 yr old male was threatened
by 4 offenders brandishing spanners at a business on George Street,
Prestwich. They escaped in his Volvo.
2020hrs: A 28 yr old female was attacked
from behind by a man who stole her keys and escaped in her Audi.
2100hrs: 2 men were attacked by a male
brandishing an axe on Higher Ainsworth Road in Radcliffe. The offender
wore a balaclava and was caught tampering with the owner's BMW. He
escaped on foot.
WED
0730hrs: A male was dragged from his car
on Lowther Road, Prestwich by 2 men wearing ski masks. In a brutal
attack the offenders struck the man across the face with a monkey
wrench. The victim is now recovering in hospital.
0820hrs: A female driver foiled an
attempt to steal her vehicle on St. Georges Rd in Unsworth, Bury. The
lone male attempted to steal the car as it idled with the driver absent,
however the woman returned in time to prevent the theft - the man
escaped on foot.
"Anyone who leaves the keys in their
car is leaving themselves vulnerable to thieves. Always try to park in
well lit areas and keep the doors locked at all times whilst
driving." said DI Antrobus.
"This type of crime has increased in
recent years as advances in technology have made it more difficult to
steal without keys. Be aware of your surroundings and who, if anybody,
is waiting nearby."
Is it no longer safe to even drive the
streets of Greater Manchester?
Anyone with information on the above is
asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
