Salford community gets new school:

Next month sees the construction of the first new secondary school in Salford for over 20 years.

As part of the city’s regeneration project the site will not only provide for its pupils, but for the surrounding community as well. Created by local designers and architects the school's facilities will be open after hours to local residents who will be able to use the library, sports hall and drama studio for themselves.

The site for the new school - facilities will be open to adults too.

Councillor Keith Mann, chief leader for education in Salford, described the venture as "meeting the standards of the 21st century".

"There will be extra classroom space for computers", he stated, "the [now demolished] Lowry and Kersal High Schools would have been costly to repair and also too small."

The Albion High School - on the junction of Cromwell Road and London Street - will provide places for up to 1000 pupils and as many as 100 teaching staff. The much needed facility is set to open in September 2003.
