Tuesday 22nd January 2002, 03:30
In the early hours of this morning police were called to a disturbance at a house in the Baguley area of Manchester.

A 41 yr old man was reported to be threatening his 44yr old partner and her 15yr old son with a Samurai sword. Emergency services were kept on standby alongside a police armed response unit.

The woman and her son were released by the man at 03:30 and are believed to be unharmed. The man emerged unarmed from the house half an hour later. He was detained under the Mental Health Act for examination.

"These are very difficult incidents.." said Sergeant Malcolm Cooper "..it was felt in this case that an early intervention would be successful."
