Residents and politicians are up in arms following the proposal by the Greater Manchester Magistrate Courts Committee to close both of Salford and Bolton's Magistrates' Courts. Councillor John Merry expressed concern that this move would lead to Salford's justice-seekers being forced to travel further a field. He urged Salfordites to take action:

"Now the public consultation period is underway, residents have the ideal opportunity to fight the plans - this is their chance to speak up." Objections have also been raised by representatives from both courts and the police.

The proposal follows revelations that over £5 million worth of improvements will have to made at the two premises, over the next ten years.
